Beware Aid Agencies Bearing Gifts

USAID’s so-called ‘democracy promotion programmes’ are designed to foment dissent against governments unfriendly to Washington

There is no such thing as a free lunch as states that are recipients of western aid understand only too well. The naive may believe that foreign aid is a tool to help developing countries; sceptics are convinced it’s a quid pro quo enabling wealthy powers to exercise geopolitical policy objectives. In a documentary, filmmaker John Pilger made the case that the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund are “The New Rulers of the World” on behalf of their largest donor countries — the US, the UK, Germany, France and Japan. But some less powerful nations are alleging that one agency — the US Agency for International Development (USAID) — is acting as a front for the CIA.

Prince Harry Charity in boarding school fees scandal

pigs-at-the-troughOne of Britain’s biggest charities, whose patron is Prince Harry, has used hundreds of thousands of pounds of donors’ money to pay the boarding school fees of its chief executive’s children. The Halo Trust, whose trustees include the actress Angelina Jolie, has sanctioned the payment of tens of thousands of pounds a year for more than a decade to fund the private education of Guy Willoughby’s four children.

Most importantly, the practice has been in place at Halo for more than a decade although no mention is made of the arrangement in the charity’s accounts or on its website. This shows the need for fully open accounting, which we should be demanding before giving any money out at all.

Message to the African Wildlife Foundation

[vimeo http://vimeo.com/52192689]Nakuru Lemiruni sends a message to those responsible for evicting the Samburu tribe from their land..

The Samburu of Kisargei, in Kenya’s Laikipia district, were brutally evicted from the lands they call home in 2010 after the land was sold to the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF). AWF, using funds from The Nature Conservancy (TNC), says it bought the land on the understanding that no-one lived there. When the Samburu protested and took the matter to the courts the land was hurriedly ‘gifted’ to the government.

Police chose a Friday “market day” for their attack, when the men were away and only women, elders, and children were in their homes. Fanning out across the 17,000- acre Eland Downs Ranch, police burned the Samburu families’ homes to the ground, along with all their possessions.

Identified in the Kenyan press as “squatters,” the evicted Samburu families petitioned a regional court to recognize their ancestral claims to the land where they lived and grazed their cattle The suit has been filed by the Samburu against the African Wildlife Foundation and the former President. They need money and public support to win.

Social giving makes us happier

People usually feel good when they make a charitable donation, but they feel even better if they make the donation directly to someone they know or in a way that builds social connection. Research to be published in the International Journal of Happiness and Development investigates for the first time how social connection helps turn generous behavior into positive feelings on the part of the donor.

Haiti Reconstruction: Hotels, Sweatshops and Deregulation

Today, the “international community” is running Haiti again, colonial style.

One can easily tell by comparing the very slow construction of shelters and basic infrastructure for the Haitian majority with the rapid rise of luxury hotels for foreigners, sometimes with the help of aid funds which, we were told, were going to provide Haitians with basic necessities.

Most of the aid money went to donor countries’ businesses, government agencies and NGOs, as usual. International “aid” is a well-known capitalist scheme aimed at developing markets in the global south for businesses from the North. Of course this “aid” will benefit Haitians. But only the very few elite ones: those in power and the rich corporate elite. “Haiti’s open for business” and deluxe hotels will be welcoming businessmen so they can set up their sweat shops in a cool and luxurious environment.

Red Cross Buries Malaria Cure

(NaturalNews) The International Federation of Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the parent organization of the more widely known American Red Cross, is currently engaged in a massive cover-up of a simple, non-toxic cure for malaria. A recent field trial conducted with a team of Red Cross humanitarian workers in Uganda found that 100 percent of malaria victims treated with a simple solution mixed in water were healed within 24 to 48 hours — but now the Red Cross is disassociating from the findings, claiming the trial never even happened.

A leaked documentary film recently posted to YouTube shows a team of experts heading to the small Ugandan village of Iganga, where a joint trial evaluating the effects of sodium chlorite activated to produce chlorine dioxide, a solution more popularly known as MMS, took place back in December with the help of Ugandan Red Cross workers. The film, which features a number of Red Cross officials and other workers administering the solution to local villagers, details the progress of the trial from start to finish, highlighting its important findings. Nonprofits caught withholding Superstorm Sandy Donations

(NaturalNews) Scores of Americans were saddened by the loss of life and massive damage caused by Superstorm Sandy and as such were motivated to give money to non-profit charities providing relief to victims of the disaster. Only much of that money – tens of millions of dollars, in fact – has never made it to those it was intended to help. And now New York state’s attorney general is trying to figure out why.

“This is about transparency. This is about accountability,” Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said. “This is about us all understanding that the money goes where the donors intended and the relief is delivered effectively and efficiently.”

CEO of CARE Joining the Board of Coca-Cola

[Is it really surprising when we allow our ‘charities’ to be run exactly like mega-corporations, with exactly the same value system and skills needed to run them ‘properly’?]

In its continuing frenzy to silence potential critics, Coca-Cola issued a press release recently that announced the following:

Helene D. Gayle, M.D., M.P.H., has been nominated to stand for election to the Company’s Board of Directors at its Annual Meeting of Shareowners in April.Dr. Gayle, 57, is President and CEO of CARE USA, a leading international humanitarian organization whose poverty fighting programs reached approximately 122 million people last year in 84 countries.

Why in the world would Dr. Gayle want to sit on the Coca-Cola Board of Directors when Coca-Cola’s export of non-nutritious, sugary drinks to the world’s poorest countries is causing a new set of chronic health problems for those living in poverty — including obesity, heart disease, diabetes and dental caries (cavities)? The U.S. is already dealing with the phenomenon of food insecure families suffering from obesity, thanks in good part to overconsumption of cheap soft drinks that are heavily marketed in our poorest communities.

Surely Dr. Gayle must have seen this startling statistic: For each additional sugary drink a child consumes per day, his or her risk of obesity increases by an astonishing 60 percent.* That applies to children living in poverty as well.

How UNICEF Harms Third World Children And Misleads About Their Deaths

A recent Associated Press story shows how UNICEF harms the interests of third world children by using the media to mislead the world.  UNICEF, a United Nations organisation (originally called United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund) exaggerates the effect on the health of third world children of its activities.  UNICEF’s efforts are effectively insignificant compared to the effect of continuing economic growth in the developing world.  Economic growth delivers dramatic health effects.  It brings cleaner water and improved nutrition which are long proven to be the key factors in improving child health and preventing deaths from infectious disease.
